When purchasing
online keep the following things in mind:
1) Use an up-to-date
Browser Version
The
security of any information you submit online starts with the internet
browser on YOUR computer. Even a website that has implemented all of
the latest security precautions can't protect information that is sent
unencrypted in the first place. That's why, if you shop online you must
have a secure browser installed, which will do it's part to encrypt
(scramble) your private information. These days, your browser needs
to support 128 bit encryption. Check with your software manufacturer
for additional information specific to your browser.
2) Watch the
Website Address…
Pay attention to the address (also known as a Uniform Resource Locator
or 'URL') of the page that asks you to submit personal and payment information.
A branded URL confirms that you are dealing with the correct company.
Also, if the connection to the website is secure, the address will begin
with https://… (the "s" stands for "secure")!
3) Check for
the Secure Connection Icon
Before giving out your credit card number online, look for the graphic
on your browser that indicates that the business is operating with a
secure server. If your browser's "security" icon is not displayed, then
you may not wish to transmit your credit card information.
4) Choose and
Submit your Password Wisely
Some internet sites ask you to create an account with a password. To
protect yourself, never use the same password you use for other accounts
or sites. And never submit a password to an area of a site that is not
displaying the secure connection icon in your browser. But DO make sure
you note the password down somewhere for future reference! NEVER reveal
your password in response to unsolicited e-mails, no matter WHO they
claim to be.
5) Consider The
Appropriateness of Information Requested
Be cautious if you're asked to supply your Social Security number or
personal bank account information. This type of information should NEVER
be required for an online purchase.
6) Look for a
Privacy Statement
A site should have a privacy policy telling you how their company will
treat the information you submit when you make a purchase. If you cannot
find one, contact the site and ask to see its policy on privacy protection.
7) Enter your
Information Accurately
Pay close attention to all the information you enter. A single, accidental
keystroke may mean you've ordered the wrong item or wrong number of
items. Always print out a copy of each purchase order with a confirmation
number and file it.
8) Read Site
and Company Sales Policies
Before ordering, understand what the company's return policy is. Under
law, a company should ship your order within the time it advertises.
If a deadline for shipment is not given, federal law says the company
should ship the product within 30 days, unless you also are applying
for credit. Companies must alert you to delays and get your approval
or let you cancel and receive a refund.
9) Always Request
Shipment to your Credit Card Billing Address
When you purchase online, or over the phone, your credit card company
generally requires that you always request shipments be delivered to
the same address that is listed as the billing address on your credit
card. This is one of the cardinal safety rules of online ordering.
