Many new oil pumps are of inferior quality these days, obviously we carry the best available, which are genuine Schadeck! Clearances are tight and they wear well. They also work with 3 AND 4 bolt cams! (we tell you how) We recommend 21 or 26mm for stock and mild engines with the T-1 based engine, and 30mm for T-1 and 3 race cars. We recommend the 30mm pump in all T-4 engine applications (the oil system can handle the extra volume). WARNING: a 30mm pump in a Type 1 or Type 3 engine can blow out your oil cooler or cooler seals with 30, 40, or 20-50 weight oil when cold if you don't modify the pressure relief system! The Type 4 engine is safe from this condition.
Many people are not aware that VW machines the oil pump bore (in the case) to about 2.7535”, and the pump body should measure 2.7570” . A .0035" larger pump then hole in the case creates an interference fit, which is why you need a puller to get it out (if you don't need a puller, you have an undersized pump). These pumps provide much more pressure than "stock" unmodified pumps! With these tight tolerances, you MUST be careful you don't overwhelm the stock oil pressure relief system. These can easily generate over 200psi on with thick oil and cold weather! If you intend on using these on a type 4 engine with a Type 4 fan shroud, you will need to grind down one corner of the stock T-1 pump cover to clear the 7 o clock fan shroud mount boss on the engine case. On a type 4, you will still have to spot face (grind) the cam bolt heads to make sure they clear the pump body. With the T-4 Pump Option, we have modified the pump body correctly to give you the clearance you need for proper pump operation. Choose the 30mm pump for T-4s, 21 or 26mm pump for Type 1s.
